LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European shares fell heavily again on Tuesday, as investors took on board more losses in Asia, with tension likely to grow before Wall Street returns from a long holiday weekend. On Monday, several major European indexes, including London's FTSE 100, recorded their biggest one-day loss since the terrorist attacks in New York in 2001, amid growing fears of a U.S. recession. As on Monday, notable decliners included banks such as Deutsche Bank, down 6.5%, and insurance firms such as AXA, down 5.5%. The U.K. FTSE 100 index dropped 3.4% to 5,389.30, the German DAX 30 index slumped 3.9% to 6,527.83 and the French CAC-40 index fell 2.8% to 4,613.79.
